We Make Movies

The DIY Film Collective That's Got Your Back

up on our feet night

Up On Our Feet Night gives you the opportunity to show the community a more polished version of your craft.

Actors, we encourage you to showcase, in depth, characters and elements of your talent that the community may not have seen yet. Writers, this is a night where you can see how your staging and action comes to life. Directors, we want you to show us your vision of a piece. We highly encourage actors to team up with WMM writers and directors to simulate the real life collaboration that happens when a film is actually shooting.

Check out the guidelines below…

WHEN: Once per month. Check our calendar for the next date, but note the queue is usually filled up at least a month in advance. So submit now to reserve your place in line.

WHERE: THE BROADWATER – 6322 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038

Bonus: Free soda, water and snacks!

This event brought to you via Patreon!

The Logistics:

  • The basis of the night is that all performances will be off book— these can be prepared scenes or monologues from existing plays, film or television projects or brand new, original material that is in rehearsals to be performed or shot! We additionally are allowing directors to submit rough ideas that we will can help cast with actors (or cast your own!) who will then do a long-form improv of the scene to help brainstorm ideas.

  • The first part of the night is for the prepared scenes, monologues, stand-up material and one long-form improv'd scene. The second part of the night is a group improv jam! No experience necessary!

  • Submit your monologue, scene with two or more actors, or long form improv idea via this form. Also, if at the last second you have an audition to prepare for and you want to run it in front of our audience, let us know and we will see if we can fit you in.

  • After you’ve submitted via the form to reserve a place in the queue, we will notify you once you’re close to the top and give you ample time to prepare your scene (FYI we will try to put as much material in each night as possible).

  • If you have any questions, please email the programmers of the workshop at performanceworkshop@wemakemovies.org.

  • In the form there’s an option to say you’ll be ready to go up with 48 hours notice. This is extremely helpful as we often have last minute cancellations and with a long queue it’s a great way to get bumped up! Those who select this option get first refusal for the open spots, if no one accepts the open spot, the programmers are free to fill the spots as they see fit with performers from outside the community.

  • The programmers will always have one slot out of six that they can program as they see fit with a member outside of the community. This could be a comic, sketch team, improv team, or any off-book performance.

    The Basics:

  • Each group gets up to 10 minutes to perform—you can do 1 scene, multiple scenes or 1 scene two different ways as long as the running time is 10 minutes or less.

  • Everyone must be completely off book—no exceptions and no calling for “line”. Treat this as a real, final stage performance.

  • Each group must decide as a whole when submitting if they want to receive feedback from the audience or not. Feedback may be tailored to the group’s wishes, for instance, you can request feedback on just acting, just directing, or just the writing (or any combo thereof) but the entire group must agree on whatever decision made.
You can use this night as a pre-production rehearsal time….but remember, all actors must be off-book!

    The Details:

  • No lighting tech will be available, so any necessary scene changes must be delineated other ways.

  • Any performers are allowed to film their work as long as they get permission from any other people who also may be performing with them in a scene or performance of any kind.

  • Any props or set pieces must be provided by the group themselves or found within the space. NOTE: WMM is not responsible for guaranteeing the availability of any set pieces ahead of time.

  • The backstage area will be a designated “quiet zone” so performers can prepare properly. Please let a member of the WMM team know if someone isn’t respecting this and we’ll be happy to address it.

  • All setup/cleanup must be able to be done within 2 minutes, so NO backdrops or free standing walls allowed. If you need help moving set pieces/setting up please reach out to the community (via the WMM Members Only FB group) to ask for volunteers or feel free to bring your own crew in!

  • Feel free to use this night as a way to invite those outside the WMM community (industry or otherwise) to become familiar with your work.
