Cost: Free!
What it is: This is a free monthly Hollywood screenplay reading workshop run by Sam Mestman, Joe Leonard and Tara Samuel. We are focused on providing a venue for fresh pages to be read by actors — with the aim of encouraging the writers and exploring the material as a precursor to pre-production, whether it be for a short film, a spec pilot, or a feature film. It’s also a place for writers, actors, directors, etc. to get together and maybe meet a few people worth working with. Not only that, but we serve free wine, chips, cookies, and sometimes a vegetable and cheese platter. We are always looking for new writers and actors. This workshop is free and open to the public.
Where It Is: Theater of The Arts (1625 N Las Palmas 90028).
(Note on Parking) Despite what many consider notoriously bad parking in this area, it’s not as bad as you think. In addition to being 2 blocks from the metro, because we scheduled wednesdays, metered parking ends at 8pm, and there are plenty of free spots all along Selma. There’s also a $5 lot one block east of the theater and free parking for 2 hours (with validation) at Hollywood and Highland if you cant find anything on the street. This is doable.
How it works: We typically do 3 or 4 submissions (usually 15 pages or less) at each workshop. They can be shorts, or excerpts from larger works. Occasionally, we will do entire nights dedicated to a full script, but this is reserved for regulars who have submitted smaller sections through our regular workshop first. After each submission, we do a brief Q&A with the writer where they receive feedback and possible suggestions from the audience.
To submit your work: Send an email with “WMM Submission” in the header to info@wemakemovies.org. Attach the excerpt in .pdf format (we only accept .pdf), or full piece if it’s a short/webisode (15 pages max) as well as a full casting breakdown of the roles you’d like to have cast for it, and we’ll get you up there as soon as it’s your turn in line. Some additional recommendations:
- Pull as much description out of your submission as possible – Nothing puts a room to sleep like endless description. We recommend doing a once over on anything you plan on submitting, and pull out anything that isn’t absolutely necessary to convey your scene.
- 15 page maximum – The reason we do excerpts is so people can focus on your work. Keep it short and sweet. If something absolutely kills as an excerpt, we will probably go ahead and give you your own night for your feature.
To be a Reader: Send an email over to info@wemakemovies.org with “Reader (insert date of workshop)”. If you don’t put the date of the workshop you’d like to read in the subject, we may not be able to find your email when we do casting. (you can RSVP for as many workshops as you want, but please send separate emails with the dates you’re available to read in the subject of each). We will do our best to get you a part, and if we don’t have one available, you’ll be first on the list for the next workshop. We’ll send you an email a couple days before the workshop letting you know either way. Also, please attach headshot/links to your work so we can get an idea how to cast you.
NOTE: Our readings are cold (no rehearsals, unless the writer sets that up with the actors privately) … however, actors receive scripts beforehand to read and prepare however much they choose to. Basically, like anything else in life, the more you put in to your part when you read, the more we want you to come back, and the better parts you’ll get at future workshops … plus, you never know who’s going to be in attendance and watching …
