Distribution: the holy grail of independent film. These days no one, not even the top Indie filmmakers, can get good distribution deals without a lot of legwork. Film Independent does what they can to help you out though. The Distribution Case Studies Panel at Film Independent’s Forum was an eye-opening look into what EXACTLY happens after you’ve made your (brilliant) film. Producers from two very different films, with very different distribution models, showed up to talk about how they successfully marketed their film and got it seen by audiences around the country and the world.
Play the Game
A Semi-traditional theatrical release. Play the Game, produced by Marc Fienberg, still wanted a traditional theatrical release. But, as a movie that stars seniors (Andy Griffith and Doris Roberts) they weren’t getting any attention from distributors early on. So what did they do? They catered to the senior populations of cities during festivals, and continued the strategy during their theatrical release. Fienberg called it “find the busybody” – find the most popular, most socially active senior within a ten mile radius of your theater, and make them an ambassador of the film. They’ll do all the legwork for you and get all the seats filled!
